NJPW – G1 Climax 28 – Day 19 – Final – August 12th, 2018

After 18 previous days of intense G1 action we arrive at the G1 Climax 28 Final. We’ve seen some awesome matches and great storylines over the past 9 Days of A Block and 9 Days of B Block and here we are, August 12th, 2018.

This show is headlined by A Block winner, Tanahashi vs B Block winner, Kota Ibushi to see who will the winner of the G1 Climax tournament 28. Also on this show is Rey Mysterio returning to NJPW.

This show was Live and On-Demand via njpwworld. This and every G1 show has English Commentary with Kevin Kelly and Rocky Romero.

Instead of the normal video introducing the competitors of the G1 Climax they have a new video, to the same music with a quick over view of every singles match on every night. Nice touch, enjoyable video package.

Ayato Yoshida, Shota Umino & Yuji Nagata vs Tomoaki Honma, Michael Elgin & Togi Makabe

  • Good showing early by the Young Lions but Shota is taken down by Tomoaki Honma and Honma hits his signature falling headbutt and tags in Elgin. For some reason Shota tries to chop Elgin, this didn’t work. Everyone got at least a short time in the ring in this match but in the end, Togi Makabe hits the King Kong Knee Drop on Ayato Yoshida for the win. Winners Honma, Elgin and Makabe.

Toa Henare vs Bad Luck Fale

  • This was not long at all, Henare came out the gates fast and even managed to take the big man down with a flying shoulder tackle from the top rope but Fale quickly hits the Grenade then a Bad Luck Fall. Winner Bad Luck Fale.

Taichi & Izuka vs Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI

  • This match is what you’d probably imagine from these guys. Izuka didn’t come down with his partner, Taichi but instead jumped Got and YOSHI-HASHI with a chair at the beginning. After Taichi opened the match wit YOSHI-HASHI, Taichi tagged Izuka then he spent a minute or so trying to bite yoshi-hashi but he has a muzzle on, Taichi took the muzzle off. Without the muzzle on Izuka continued to bits YOSHI-HASHI on the head and arms. Taichi pinned YOSHI-HASHI with a huge last ride powerbomb. Winners Taichi & Izuka.

Hangman Page & Cody vs Juice Robinson & David Finlay

  • Good match with lots of action, Page looked really good here, as did Cody. Juice tried a Pulp Friction but it was reversed into a Cross Rhodes but Finlay intervened but was taken out by a buckshot lariat from Page. Juice tried a Pulp Friction again but it was reversed into a Din’s Fire by Cody for the win. After the match Cody cut a promo on Juice about how he is the next US champion. Winners Cody and Hangman Page.

Six-Man Never Openweight Tag Championship Match – Matt, Nick Jackson & Marty Scurll(c) vs Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa & Taigi Ishimori

  • Before this match Tanga Loa on the mic calls for this to become a championship match, Matt Jackson asks Harold Maij who was at ringside and he said yes. This was a good match with lots of action, too much to write it all down but in the end with people in and out of the ring, Tama Tonga hits a Gun Stun on Marty Scurll to win the championships. After the match all three Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa and Ishimori throw the belts at Harold Maij and beat up on the Young Bucks more. Winners and new Six-Man Never Openweight Tag Champions, Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa and Ishimori.

Zack Sabre Jr, Taka Michinoku, Minoru Suzuki & El Desperado vs Naito, Sanada, EVIL, BUSHI

  • Suzuki-gunget the jump start on LIJ as Suzuki targets Naito. These two have been in opposite Blocks in this tournament and that makes this feel fresh, even with seeing these two very regularly for the past 18 Days of this tournament. Suzuki targets Naito’s arm in an Armbar on the apron and it looked great. This was a fun 8-Man tag match with lots of Suzuki hurting people. In the end, Kanemaru relied to spray mist in the face of Sanada but Sanada reversed into Skull End for the win. Winners, Los Ingobernables De Japon.

Tomohiro Ishii, Toru Yano & Jay White vs Kenny Omega, Yujiro Takahashi & Chase Owens

  • Funny spot in the match where Kenny and Chase go for the rowing spot that targets the groin but when Tanahashi gets involved, he invites his lady friend to stand and dance provocatively in the middle. Chase and Takahashi stop rowing as they stair at her, so for Jay White but Kenny sends her out of the ring. Chase Owens has a good showing against Ishii here and even gets a good nearfall but Ishii hits Owens with a a brainbuster for the win. After the match, Ishii hands Omega his belt, claiming he wants a shot. Winners Ishii, Jay White and Toru Yano.

Kazuchika Okada, SHO & YOH vs Kushida, Taguchi(In a mask, with a gimmick) & Rey Mysterio

  • Rey Mysterio has awesome gear for this show, his second in NJPW. Rey starts with Okada. This was a fun match with some comedy. Some nearly botched spots here. One that I found funny was when Taguchi tried a standing Moonsalt but landed on his head, he seemed fine but Kevin Kelly said “It was kinda half a moonsalt, half land on your head” I laughed at that. Rey Mysterio hit a 619 on his third attempt on YOH to win this match. Winners, Rey Mysterio, Taguchi and Kushida.

Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Kota Ibushi

  • As the video package before the match said, Kota Ibushi stands on the stage of dreams for the first time. Kota Ibushi has Kenny Omega in his corner and Hiroshi Tanahashi has Shibata in his corner. This was an incredible match and an epic battle. They went about 40 minutes and beat the hell out each other but no matter how hard Kota fought Tanahashi was too much today as Tanahashi eventually hits a High Fly Flow to the back of Kota Ibushi so Kota can’t get the knees up but when Tanahashi goes back up to the top rope Kota has stood up, Tanahashi hits a High Fly Flow to a standing Kota Ibushi then a third to finish the match. Great match and definitely worth watching. The match felt special, had a lot of hype as the final match in such a great tournament but I feel it could have been the best match in the tournament and probably my favourite. Winner of this match and the G1 Climax 28 is Hiroshi Tanahashi.
